   GMARC Vice President Kurt WU8V, Vice-Flotilla Commander Jonathan Martichuski, and

Former Division Commander Jerome Werner at the GMARC meeting 20-Feb-06.

Vice-Flotilla Commander Jonathan Martichuski making presentation on

the "CG Auxiliary High Frequency (HF) telecommunicaitons"

The purpose of the Auxiliary is to assist the Coast Guard:

(1) to promote safety and to effect rescues on and over the high seas and on navigable waters

(2) to promote efficiency in the operation of motorboats and yachts;

(3) to foster a wider knowledge of, and better compliance with, the laws, rules, and regulations governing the operation of motorboats and yachts;

(4) to facilitate other operations of the Coast Guard.

There are over 1 million recreational boats registered in Michigan alone.  With this much area to cover, the need for willing and enthusiastic volunteers to help educate and assist the general public is enormous.  You can help!  The mission of the USCG Auxiliary is to support the Coast Guard in its mission to make the waterways safer for the recreational boater.

The Great Lakes -- Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario -- and their connecting channels form the largest fresh surface water system on earth. If you stood on the moon, you could see the lakes and recognize the familiar wolf head shape of Lake Superior, or the mitten bounded by lakes Michigan, Huron and Erie. Covering more than 94,000 square miles and draining more than twice as much land, these Freshwater Seas hold an estimated 6 quadrillion gallons of water, about one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water supply and nine-tenths of the U.S. supply. Spread evenly across the contiguous 48 states, the lakes' water would be about 9.5 feet deep.
